He is a Nashville born artist that I think will prove to interest and excite all the elementary students. This artist will bring about some 3-D projects that I think will have some interesting results.

This student was plesantly surprised upon finishing her picture. Her comment was priceless regarding the shadow under the boat. It was something to the effect that it just happened. That is the joy of creating art, sometimes the process surprises and amazes us!

This picture begins the 5th grade series of artwork. Students in 5th grade researched Winslow Homer and found the picture they wanted to paint and the only requirement was that it had to have water in the scene. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the fine quality of these pictures. Great job, 5th Graders!!!

The next series of pictures are the work of 4th and 5th graders. 4th Graders were shown a selection of Winslow Homer paintings and then challenged to create their own watercolor using watercolor crayons. Students were given the liberty to use artistic license in regards to what they included or omitted in their pictures. This particular pictures is a 4th grade example.

Alot of fine detail on this ship draws your attention to the bright sun behind. This is a fine example of the third grade watercolor project.

3rd Grade students worked with watercolor using the wet on wet technique for sky and water with salt added to the wet paint on the bottom to give the picture a formy look of the sea. The black silhouettes make for a striking finish.

1st graders were exposed to wet on wet techniques to create water and sky for the background of their Winslow Homer piece. The water was created on watercolor paper and then torn to expose crashing waves which is a major part of Homer's pieces. The sailboats look as if they are gliding on the surface of these bright blue waves.

K-5 did a multi layer ocean scene in their study of Winslow Homer. A green ocean filled with sea creatures lays below a beautiful watercolor sky with bright sun, blue clouds and flying birds. This is looks like a place Winslow Homer would have loved.

The pictured display shows the fine variety of music instrument collages created by fifth grade students.

Fifth Grade were challenged to draw instruments that were set up in the art room. After finishing those drawings, they were free to create a collage that showcased the instruments and the sights and sounds of music that Bearden loved so much in the era of jazz.

Fourth Graders also heard the music of Duke Ellington along with Romare Bearden's art images and then created beautiful moving keyboards with musical symbols and instruments to dress up the tissue paper backgrounds.

Each collage done by third grade was unique and captured with great accuracy the style of artist Romare Bearden.

Third graders were challenged to model Bearden's work in collage by creating their own magazine collage piece. After laying in the green grass and blue sky, pieces were added to create their landscape. This grade made a strong connection to Romare Bearden's style.

Second Graders explored the work of Romare Bearden along with the definition of warm colors and cool colors. With that choice in mind, students created a city in three layers and then added magazine cutouts of people to model the work of Bearden.

First graders viewed the work of Romare Bearden along with listening to the music of Duke Ellington, who was a frequent visitor in the Bearden home when Romare was a youngster. This and several pictures that follow are fine examples of collage with a music theme.

The Romare Bearden artwork is varied and colorful. Every grade featured a variation on his work represented his love of music, jazz, art, and of course, the city of New York especially Harlem.

Happy Saturday to you all! The weather is beautiful here in Tennessee and the wind is whistling outside my window as I post today. My art students have just finished another artist, African American, Romare Bearden. His work is fun and filled with the sights of the Harlem Renaissance and his love of jazz. Some fifth grade students took the Keith Haring a pit farther by creating a window effect with one of his pieces. Their rendition was quite good and as always lots of fun.

Isn't this a lovely piece? Third graders modeled the piece by Jasper Johns that involved numbers. Although he used the numbers 0 - 9 in his piece, these students used four on top of each other to create a beautiful watercolor design.

Jasper Johns, an American artist, was the third artist that students studied this year. The American Flag was one of his many themes as seen through the work of 5th Grade.

The second artist that students encountered this year was Grant Wood, the "farmer" artist from Iowa. In this first grade picture, you can easily identify Grant Wood's most famous work, "American Gothic."
